Do What You Love. Love What You Do: 3 Reasons Why Your Career is not Your Calling.

November 13, 2019

Do what you love and love what you do; a very popular quote that even I have been known to use a time or two.  Have you ever wondered what it really means?  We're in an age of increasing entrepreneurship and self employment.  If you ask a group of ten people , "so what do you do for  a living?" , at least three of them will tell you about their business and not their job.  It's usually those three people that will also claim to live by a mantra similar to my opening statement.  Its not surprising that many associate this statement with only working for oneself or abandoning their current situation to do their own thing.  I want to set the record straight that doing what you love is not synonymous with working for yourself.

A good friend of mine told me just a few days ago that she was asked why she works so hard for her job. She replied, because I actually love this work. As a Human Resources Manager at a school, I go to work everyday pretty excited about what I get to do in my profession. I smile a lot at work and I typically feel like I am at home in my space. What a blessing! After work, I'm still working. You can find me either in the gym giving a group fitness class or doing some part-time Human Resources consulting work. When people ask me, why I work all of the time. My answer is the same as my friend's. I actually love what I do.

If this is possible for my friend and I why are there so many people who don't do what they love and love what they do?  I asked around and one of the most common answers I received had to do with money.  Chasing money makes us do things  that we don't really want to do for work. Instead, we do things that we have to do. On the surface this sounds like a very logical reason to sacrifice your energy, effort and time. The right amount of money can make anything sound worthwhile, right?  But I have to tell you I think its deeper than money. It all boils down to a belief system.  If you believe that making "good" money only happens when you perform in a job you don't love. Then so be it. That is what you will do.  If you believe that doing what you love only happens if you work for yourself, but you lack the ability to work for yourself and make the money that you want, then I guess you will continue to work for someone doing something that you don't want to do. There's no judgment in this post, but if your career isn't your calling and you spend your days and nights wishing that it was, please understand the top three reasons really have nothing to do with money.

1.  Fear- this sounds like "If I do what I love, I will have to take a pay cut and I don't want to."  You could either be afraid you will end up living with less money or afraid of what others will think of you living with less money.

2. Comfort- this sounds like "I've worked here for 10 years. I don't want to start over".  You could be used to doing what you've always done. Change is always a little uncomfortable.

3. Uncertainty- this sounds like "I'm not sure what I want to do." "I don't know where to start." You can't begin to do what you love, if you don't know what that is. When we don't know what to do, we often do nothing at all.

Making your calling your career is not an easy task, but it is an achievable task. If you're okay where you are, continue in your greatness. If you'd like to make a change, first change your mind and you'll be on your way.
